Professor Shamsul Azhar Bin Shah obtained his PhD in medical sciences from Niigata, Japan in 2012. He is presently working as Professor of Epidemiology and Statistics, Faculty of Medicine, UKM and functioning as senior consultant public health specialist at UKM medical Centre. He has worked as a medical officer and Assistant Director of Disease Surveillance section in Ministry of Health (MOH), Malaysia. He also worked as a director in Hospital Sri Aman, Sarawak and director in UMBI. His research area is wide spread across Infectious disease (Tuberculosis, Dengue, Typhoid), Non Communicable disease (Cancer, Mental Health, Diabetes), Clinical trials, Medical GIS and Disabled and Paralympic Sports. To his credit he published more than 150 research papers in international and national journals. He holds many administrative roles such as Ethics and Research Committee, UKMMC, Editor and editorial board in International Journal of Public Health Research, Journal of Surgical Academia, Yemeni Journal for Medical Sciences and International Journal of Travel Medicine. He is a member of Public Health Specialist Association of Malaysia (Persatuan Pakar Perubatan Kesihatan Awam Malaysia), International Epidemiological Association (IEA) and Malaysian Society for Environmental Epidemiology.
He is actively involved in Paralympic Sports from 1998 and represented Malaysia in Para Table-Tennis from 2001 – 2009. He is a Medical Classifier for Paralympic sports in national events, Medical Classifier for Para Table-Tennis (ITTF) since 2005 and Medical Classifier for Para-badminton (BWF) since 2010. He has been awarded with Sports Masters Award – Global Malaysian – 2005, Ronpaku Japanese Society on the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship – 2008 and Special Disabled Award (Academic) in conjunction with National Disabled People Celebration Day -2016.
