President, Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS)
Amrahi Buang has been the President of Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS) since 2016, the recognized national professional body for pharmacists in Malaysia.
Prior to that he held the position of Deputy President from 2014 to 2016.
He is a member of the Malaysian Pharmacy Board, Malaysian Poisons Board, National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee, National Continuous Professional Development Committee, National Patient Safety Council and National Tobacco Control Committee. He also sits in the steering and technical committees under the National Medicines Policy since 2006.
He has served 35 years at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), Kuala Lumpur as the Chief Pharmacist and Deputy Director Professional. As the Deputy Management Representative, he has been actively involved in quality management system and helped UMMC to be the first hospital in the country to be certified nationwide-wide under MS 9001 – Quality Management System in 2002. UMMC received the Malaysian Book of Records for this achievement. This was sustained successfully for five cycles until he retired from UMMC in 2015.
He was also one of the main pillars in UMMC for hospital accreditation under the Malaysian Society for Quality in Healthcare (MSQH) in 2012. UMMC is the first teaching hospital to be accredited by MSQH in Malaysia.
He is passionate about quality control and quality management systems as he believes these structures enhance an organization via KPI’s, Risk Assessment and Audts and the results of all the mentioned items make an organization better.
Amrahi’s contribution in the field of hospital pharmacy practice in Malaysia is immense through his time at UMMC. He has brought the level to a world class status in terms of a fully computerized hospital pharmacy, a hospital-based sterile complex for production of parenteral nutrition and reconstitution of cytotoxics and an innovative community pharmacy outlet.
Further, Amrahi is very passionate about the halal pharmaceuticals and is considered one of the leading subject matter experts on this topic. He has been interviewed by Radio IKIM, TV3 and Selamat Pagi Malaysia (RTM1) on this subject matter besides other media channels.
This is not a new passion as he pioneered this field in UMMC since 1998 and is now a member of the technical committee and working committees of MS 2424:2012 – Halal Pharmaceuticals standard, the only global halal standards for pharmaceuticals. He is also in the technical and working committee for Halal Medical Devices standard, also the first in the world. He is a certified halal trainer in this field.
Amrahi has carried a lot of training in the fields of quality, quality management, auditing, risk management and medication safety in UMMC. A practice he is keen to slowly inject into the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society.
Currently, he is the trainer for training of preceptors for provisionally registered pharmacist (PRP) under the Malaysian Pharmacy Board for private hospitals. In this role, he creates spaces for the unemployed PRP’s by training potential employers. This is one of his contributions to the professional that has helped many PRP secure jobs while waiting to be called by the government, a process that can sometimes take up to 1 year.
He has sat in many Board of Studies and curriculum review committees for several universities in Malaysia for pharmacy graduate programmes, the latest being in International Islamic University of Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Being a part of the academia is his way of bringing in pragmatic solutions to the the issue of a world class pharmacy practice in Malaysia.
Amrahi has done a business coaching on Muslim Centric Customer Service for CCM-Halal Pharmapreneur programme for nineteen participating community pharmacists in 2017-2018.
In conclusion, the President of MPS, Tn Hj Amrahi has in his capacity as Deputy President successfully petitioned the government for zero rated GST on medicines and in his capacity as President, brought MPS to the stakeholders table with his integrity, grit and knowledge to shine light on the RUUF.
Since 2014, he is very passionate on focusing on the annual celebration of World Pharmacist Day Malaysia which he feels in an excellent opportunity to showcase pharmacist and pharmacy profession to the public.
